When it comes to the world of direct-to-consumer furniture brands, Article is a name to know. Since 2013, the brand has built its reputation around designing stylish, flat-pack furniture at wallet-friendly prices. And while their inventory has traditionally been sold exclusively online, the Canadian company has since expanded into a Vancouver store, with plans to open more brick-and-mortar locations across California and Washington later this year. But back to the wares—Article’s wide range of furniture and decor can outfit just about every nook and cranny of your home, whether indoors or out.
It’s not an exaggeration to say the Shop AD team has been testing Article products for years, drawn to the timeless silhouettes that’ll compliment virtually any interior aesthetic. Ahead, we hand-picked a few of our favorites to spotlight, including lots of seating that will withstand the trend cycles and small-space friendly upgrades to maximize square footage. Still need more convincing? Know that Article offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, one-year furniture warranties, and free exchanges.
The Krossa shelf leans Scandi (like most of Article’s designs), while keeping functionality at the forefront of its design. “I really appreciate the effort that went into the joinery, which makes it much more interesting than just your standard ladder bookshelf,” says shopping director Rachel Fletcher. Sporting a tapered, ladder-esque shape, the bottom shelves start wide and deep at the bottom and get narrower the higher up it goes, which comes in handy if the goal is to display more than just books, Fletcher points out. In addition to her paperbacks, she says, “I have a few baskets on my bottom shelf containing all sorts of knickknacks and accessories.”
The Lenia frame’s midcentury look and sturdy platform silhouette make it an attractive option for shoppers like contributor DaVonne Onassis Bacchus, who was in search of a stylish frame with functional storage possibilities. “Once the mattress was placed on my new bed frame, the first laydown was glorious,” he recalls. “Overall, it’s a stylish bed that comes with a great shopping experience.” There are four different configurations of the frame available—including a four-poster option and under storage design—that make it suited for lots of bedroom aesthetics. Bacchus also pointed out that the white finish he chose can be stark depending on your bedding color and bedroom decor, though additional walnut and black ash options are available to complement deeper color palettes.
“I love that Article manages to keep its designs stylish without being fussy or overpriced,” says contributor Zoë Sessums. With clean lines, smoked oak legs, and a sleek velvet finish, the Sanders sofa “makes an impact without feeling massive,” according to Sessums who tested the sofa for last year’s Seat Week. Rounded edges and plush cushions fulfill the desire for a softer silhouette, while the expensive-looking jewel-toned upholstery delivers on elegance. Sessums chose Pacific green velvet upholstery, telling us “in person the green has a bluer tone than anticipated but it also feels more luxurious.”
The Sven Sectional was actually the first Article product the Shop AD team tested as part of Seat Week back in 2022. “I would consider the sofa to be very much the Goldilocks of couches—not too big, not too small, and an overall crowd-pleaser,” says shopping editor Audrey Lee, who was impressed by the brand’s efficient delivery process and the Sven’s easy assembly. One of the brand’s most popular sofa silhouettes, the sofa is available in a wide range of colors and materials like fabric, leather, or velvet upholstery with or without a chaise sectional. “Its classic design mimics the silhouette of midcentury-modern furniture so it can blend in with both modern or retro decor styles,” says Lee. “The leather is good quality while the navy blue is a bit more interesting than black but still versatile enough to match with other neutral colors.”
We’d be remiss not to mention Article’s sprawling outdoor furniture and decor offerings. The Lubek outdoor sectional is partly Scandi-influenced, slightly LA-presenting, and very affordable according to contributor Meg Kernahan. The Colorado-based mom of two was looking for a comfortable and stylish sofa to be the focal point of her newly renovated outdoor space. “This couch is exactly that: large enough to comfortably seat six people around an outdoor fire pit and durable enough for my toddler to climb on,” she says. At the same time, it’s also durable enough to withstand a Colorado winter without any noticeable wear and tear after much snowy weather.
Sleeper sofas are another area where Article excels. Contributor Mackenzie Chung Fegan reports that the “minimalist Nordby Sofa Bed is attractively priced and easy to convert, with a pullout component that slides into place next to the sofa seat and forms a mattress roughly the size of a full-size pullout bed.” Those lacking ample square footage with a penchant for particularly firm mattresses might find this design to be the perfect fit, though Chung Fegan warns that the seat depth can “feel ungenerous” at times.
The Adel round dining table has a strong enough silhouette that it doesn’t need to be covered up by a tablecloth, but won’t distract from your tablescape or the meal at hand. Shopping market editor Kate McGregor reports that the sturdy white oak surface is heavier than expected, giving it a high-quality feel despite only needing 10 minutes of assembly. “ I love that the sleek white oak blends seamlessly with my more modern, collected aesthetic,” she says. “Seating up to five or even six, the table keeps everyone engaged in conversation, and is still large enough for me to use as a craft worksurface when I’m alone.”
